If you wonder why my first name changed from "Sheila" (as it was in high school) to "Shiela", it's because when I went to college at MSU they required a copy of my birth certificate. It was then that I noticed my first name was spelled wrong! It was easier to change the way I spelled my name than to legally change it on the birth certificate! (So... Does that mean I didn't legally graduate from Petoskey High???) 2016 Update: Previous to this update, I attended Michigan State University as a 'no preference' student until I married David in 1969. (You'd say he became my preferred interest!) After David served in the Army (drafted) we lived in Kalamazoo where running 10 K races was our biggest outside interest. We then moved to Saline, MI where our biggest interest was our traveling relationship with our sister-city friends in Wales and Bavaria. All the while David's interest was increasing the value of his and his client's retirement investments! But I have now retired! (Well, maybe not!) Since traveling has been a big part of those pre-retirement years (to Wales, UK six times, Germany twice and Northern Italy once), David and I celebrated his retirement from banking in the summer of 2015 by more traveling. We traveled to Europe (Amsterdam to Budapest) in October and to South American (Machu Picchu, Peru & Galapagos, Ecuador) in late November. (The Incan city of Machu Picchu has forever been at the top of my list of places to visit.) Machu Picchu was ten times better than I'd hoped for! Galapagos was great for seeing the wildlife, but I can truthfully say I was not too fond of the Marine Iguanas. Ugh! Seeing the Blue Footed Booby birds made up for them, though! We spent most of 2016 in the "parallel universe" of renovating our house from top to bottom! After 28 years in our house, it was time! But... Since traveling is more enjoyable when you are fit, we have already booked two more trips for 2017: to France in June (Paris and from the north coast to the south coast) and to Southern Germany & Austria in October. We probably won't stop traveling until we can't put one foot ahead of the other! We still have more of Italy and Ireland to see. And, added to that, we plan on seeing more of the US along the way. Meanwhile, between trips I will continue taking two watercolor classes a week and setting up our annual class art exhibit. (This was my 18th year of being in charge of setting up the show!) After playing golf at the reunion, Jill Still will probably say I should really spend more time learning to golf! Other than travel, I am going to spend as much time as I can enjoying my fabulous grandchildren! |
